We are not our hair

There are times when women feel like their hair isn’t good enough. It is not long enough or straight enough. People with small minds discuss other people. Who has time to worry about someone else’s hair when you’ve got more important things to do.

For a long time I didn’t like my hair. It was too thick and it took forever to comb. My hair wasn’t the problem. The way my hair grows out of my head was the problem. My coils were so coiled that they were kinks. If they were a little looser, I could have gotten away with saying I had curls. Why isn’t my hair ok the way it has been all my life?

Then I realized it is a cultural standard that your hair has to be fried, maybe dyed and laid to the side. I began letting my hair relax from the chemical processes 7 years ago. My hair is longer than its ever been. I can wear all the styles I always wore. I understand my hair more. My hair wants to be moisturized and it wants to breathe sometimes. Sometimes I’m so busy I just wash n go. I love my kinks more everyday. I look around and I think I don’t have to worry about going bald because I take care of my hair. I braid it up as often as I can, but I know how to take care of it myself. I can put it anyway I want, but I’m so happy that I don’t worry about edges. At my age it shouldn’t be an issue that I have pulled or permed all my edges out. Maybe when I get older, but I’m proud to say that all this thick, glorious hair is all mine. It’s always been that way and whatever kind of hair you have, love it and give it your best. If you are losing hair because you overprocessed and over -styled it, maybe you can still save your hair if you give it the loving care it needs. Our hair connects us so let’s not pretend that ours is different. If you don’t take care of it your hair is gonna leave and maybe never come back.
